Unit 5: Turfgrass Establishment

Turfgrass health and longevity is dependent on how the site is established. Proper establishment relies on soil preparation and health, correct turfgrass species selection, and intelligent use of cultural practices. Understanding and applying the steps associated with proper establishment can lead to a healthy, safe, well performing turfgrass surface.

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

• Describe each step associated with turfgrass establishment
• Determine which grasses are best suited for turfgrass sites
• Analyze a turfgrass seed label
• List the cultural practices necessary to prepare and maintain the newly established site
