Bernhard and Company launched a new company-wide challenge to raise funds for Crohn’s and Colitis UK, by taking on the ‘Race across the World’, in March, April and May.

The Race across the World challenge encourages Bernhard team members to cover the furthest distance possible over the next three months, ending May 31st, 2024. Anyone in the company can take part, and in pursuit of covering the most kilometers, staff can choose to either walk, run or cycle. There are no limits on the distance that can be travelled, so Bernhard team members will be able to rack up kilometers right up until the end of May, in the hope of raising as much money as possible.

Steven Nixon, managing director for Bernhard and Company, said, “We’re really proud to be launching another charity fundraising challenge. As a team, we’re committed to supporting great causes, and by launching this challenge, everyone in the business will come together to do their very best to raise crucial funds.

“Living with Crohn’s disease can be tough, as anxieties caused by the disease can have negative effects on mental health. So, we’re excited to work as hard as we can during these few months to keep moving and help to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by those affected.”

Crohn’s and Colitis UK provides support and information for the 300,000 UK citizens that are diagnosed with the disease, which affects gut health and leads to inflammatory bowel disorder. The charity aims to provide support and up-to-date information on the diseases for anyone who needs it, as well as breaking the taboo on these unpleasant disorders.

After taking on the Three Peaks Challenge in 2018, Bernhard and Company launched its virtual challenge in 2020: Bernhard5500, which raised over £1,000 for Parkinson’s UK. Bernhard recognized that a virtual challenge would allow them to unite employees located around the world. This time, utilizing a variety of fitness disciplines – walking, running, and cycling – allows Bernhard and Company to build on previous charity success, and enables its staff to contribute to the cause in whichever way they wish to.

The Race across the World is a team effort for all at Bernhard and Company, as a global business – and distance updates can be tracked throughout the challenge, by visiting: https://www.challengehound.com/challenge/e92cce40-d26d-11ee-929d-51f49388a738.

Bernhard and Company will be raising funds for ‘Crohn’s & Colitis UK’, which affects over 300,000 people in the UK. To find out more about this disease and those affected by it, visit: https://crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/our-work/about-us.

The Grounds Management Association (GMA) Young Board of Directors has recruited four new young sports field managers to its ranks. The new additions will add fresh energy to the Young Board’s efforts to inspire the next generation of young people to join the sector.

Joining existing members are Meg Lay, Beth Gibbs, Liddy Ford and Jack Langley. Lay, who recently moved from Gloucestershire CC to Lord’s Cricket Ground, and Gibbs, who is part of Wellington School’s grounds team, join the Young Board fresh off the back of successes in the GMA Industry Awards 2023 where Lay won Newcomer of the Year and Gibbs won Young Groundsperson of the Year.

Ford joins the Young Board with a background in horticulture as well as a BSc in sport and exercise science. Her current role is as a part of the grounds team at St George’s Park, the Football Association’s base for all 23 of England’s national football teams.

Langley joins having progressed from Assistant Grounds person to Deputy Head Grounds person at Ashton Gate Stadium, a multi-sport facility that acts as the home of Bristol City Football Club and Bristol Bears. The four new additions will use their varied backgrounds across sporting and educational facilities, and enthusiasm for grounds management, to represent the GMA in activity that aims to inspire young people to join the sector.

Work will begin with three of the new Board members, Lay, Ford and Gibbs, representing the GMA as part of the all-female grounds team preparing the pitch at Emirates Stadium for Arsenal vs Tottenham in the Women’s Super League on Sunday 3 March 2024.

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will offer a turfgrass management program for professionals on March 22 in New Braunfels.

The program, presented by Texas A&M’s Department of Soil and Crop Sciences and the AgriLife Extension office in Comal County, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the AgriLife Extension office at 325 Resource Drive.

The cost is $125, and individuals can register by visiting the AgriLife Extension office in Comal County or calling 830-620-3440.

There will be five Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units for pesticide applicators available, including one laws and regulations, one pest management and three general units.

Coffee, snacks and lunch will be provided.

The program will cover turfgrass best management practices, such as irrigation and pesticide label interpretation. A pesticide and fertilizer application calculations workshop will also be included in the program.

“This short course is designed for turfgrass professionals and enthusiasts looking to expand their knowledge of turfgrass systems and best management practices,” said Manuel Chavarria, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension specialist and professor in the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station. “The objective is to empower turfgrass managers to make confident, well-informed decisions through a combination of applied and theoretical knowledge.”

The responsible management of turfgrass, especially implementing best management practices for fertilizers and pesticides, is a crucial part of environmental stewardship, Chavarria said. This course will contribute to stakeholder education and investment in protecting local water quality. For more information about the program, contact the AgriLife Extension office in Comal County at 830-620-3440 or comal-tx@tamu.edu, or Annalee Epps at 979-321-5921 or geronimo.alligator@ag.tamu.edu.
